Looking ahead at the biggest trends in hotel design for 2020, it seems millennials are having an impact once again.
People born between the early 1980s and mid-1990s are, in fact, becoming the largest age group in the UK and many are at their peak, earning decent salaries, buying property and travelling the world.
To brands everywhere, millennials are the new focus of advertising budgets.
It’s no surprise, then, that this unique generation is leading trends in hospitality. How they choose to see the world, how they shop, eat and drink, is influencing everything from restaurants and bars to hotels.
From our visits to recent trade shows, exhibitions and fairs, we’re seeing three significant trends emerging: brand consistency, sustainability and ‘Blesiure’. We’ll talk through each of these, showing how you – as a hotel manager or specifier – can successfully cater for millennials on their travels in 2020.
Brand consistency
Millennials are more likely to spend more money on holidays than any other generation*. In their younger days, many opted for different experiences, staying in quirky places off the beaten track. Today, they’re looking for something a little more sophisticated but they still expect their chosen hotel to be “special”.
Design is important to them. They want hotels to look the part at every juncture. This is where consistency in your hotel’s identity comes into play. From your Instagram feed and Twitter account to brand colours, typography and interiors – everything has to be seamless from check-in to check-out.
At Burgess, customisation is one of our strengths. We offer a wide range of base options, finishes, and a vast choice of upholstery including fabrics, leathers and mesh in a variety of colours. We even provide accessories such as handholds and writing tablets, so there’s a Burgess chair to suit every space.
Sustainability
Millennials are said to be the most eco-conscious generation**. And that means they make considered choices in everything they buy. When looking for hotels, it’s more likely they’ll book with those who have solid eco-credentials.
Now that you’ve chosen vegan-friendly shampoos and shower gels, boosted your own green policy and encouraged guests to re-use bathroom towels – what else can you do to save the planet?
Your choice of furniture can also make a difference. At Burgess we’re proud to go beyond our green obligations. As well as quality, durability, style and strength, we also prioritise the environment and have been “thinking green” for over 50 years.
Our furniture is made from materials and products that are from sustainable sources. The wood and plywood we use in our chairs and tables is sourced from suppliers that are PEFC certified (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification).
We also create furniture that can easily be refurbished, has reusable frame parts or is completely recyclable. For example, our Configure-8 table is virtually 100% recyclable, with recyclable plastic corner moulding and an aluminium frame.
Bleisure
Finally, ‘Bleisure’ is a growing trend amongst millennials who mix business and leisure on their travels. They might be a small business owner or freelancer, hoping to add on some personal time after seeing clients. In which case, you need your hotel to be prepared for every eventuality.
Our SmartRocks® collection features modular, coastal-inspired low stools and benches with optional charging points. Pebble-shaped and in a range of calming colours (or a huge variety of fabrics, if you’d prefer), they make a fun natural touch to hotel lobbies, lounges or even bedrooms. So, whether your hotel guests are working or not, your furniture can suit all of their needs.
Or there’s TriSmart, our compact coffee table that’s ultra-modern in its design with quick and convenient wireless and USB charging technology, coffee or poseur height positions and a choice of table top shapes and base options. It can even be matched to Burgess’ Configure-8 range for a seamless breakout area solution.
